Repent and Be Baptized
Main Scripture: Acts 2:37–42
Supporting Scriptures: Romans 1:16–17; Mark 16:15–16; Romans 6:1–6; 2 Corinthians 5:14–17; 2 Peter 2:20–22; Galatians 6:7–8
Key Thought: Repentance changes our direction, faith transforms our lives, and baptism publicly declares our new identity in Jesus Christ.
⸻
Opening Devotional: A New Beginning
On the Day of Pentecost, Peter stood before a large crowd and proclaimed the good news of Jesus Christ. As the people heard his message, they were deeply convicted and asked an important question: “What shall we do?” (Acts 2:37).
Peter responded with a clear call to repentance and baptism.
Repentance is more than feeling guilty about our mistakes. The Greek word metanoeo means to change one’s mind or reconsider. Biblical repentance involves a transformation in how we think, what we believe, and ultimately how we live. It is a turning away from our old way of living and turning toward God.
Water baptism is an outward reflection of an inward work. It symbolizes our identification with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through baptism, we publicly declare that our old life has been surrendered and that we have been raised to walk in newness of life.
However, following Jesus involves more than a single decision or moment of commitment. It is an ongoing relationship in which we continually surrender our hearts, renew our minds, and allow the Holy Spirit to transform us.
The Christian life is not about trying to improve the old version of ourselves. It is about embracing the new life we have been given through Jesus Christ.
God does not simply call us to leave our old lives behind. He invites us to walk in the fullness of the new life He has prepared for us.

Small Group Discussion
1. Repentance: A Change of Heart and Mind
Read Acts 2:37–39 and Romans 1:16–17.
True repentance begins with a change in our thinking that leads to a change in how we live. When we encounter God’s truth, we are challenged to reconsider our priorities, attitudes, and actions.
Discussion Questions:
1. How would you explain the meaning of repentance to someone who is unfamiliar with Christianity?
2. What is the difference between feeling sorry for something and experiencing genuine repentance?
3. Why is changing our way of thinking essential to spiritual growth?
4. In what ways has your relationship with Christ changed your perspective on life?
Spiritual Application: Repentance is not simply turning away from something wrong. It is turning toward God and allowing His truth to shape our lives.
2. Baptism: An Outward Reflection of an Inward Work
Read Romans 6:1–6 and Mark 16:15–16.
Water baptism symbolizes our identification with Jesus Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection. It is a public expression of faith and obedience that points to the transforming work of God’s grace.
Discussion Questions:
1. What does the statement “Water baptism is an outward reflection of an inward work” mean to you?
2. Why is publicly identifying with Jesus an important expression of faith?
3. What does it mean to be buried with Christ and raised to walk in newness of life?
4. How should our identification with Christ influence our everyday behavior and decisions?
Spiritual Application: Baptism is a powerful declaration of our faith, but the new life it represents should be evident in how we live every day.
3. Embracing Our New Identity in Christ
Read 2 Corinthians 5:14–17.
When we surrender our lives to Jesus, we become new creations. Our past failures, mistakes, and former ways of living no longer have to define who we are.
Discussion Questions:
1. What does it mean to be a new creation in Christ?
2. Why do people sometimes struggle to let go of their past, even after receiving God’s forgiveness?
3. How can understanding our identity in Christ change the way we see ourselves and others?
4. What are some practical ways we can demonstrate the new life Christ has given us?
Spiritual Application: Our identity is not found in who we used to be, but in who we are becoming through our relationship with Jesus Christ.
4. Moving Forward Without Looking Back
Read 2 Peter 2:20–22 and Galatians 6:7–8.
Following Jesus requires an ongoing commitment to spiritual growth and obedience. Although temptations and challenges may arise, God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit equip us to continue moving forward.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why is it sometimes difficult to leave behind old habits, attitudes, or ways of thinking?
2. What are some signs that genuine spiritual transformation is taking place in someone’s life?
3. How can we guard against returning to patterns that are harmful to our relationship with God?
4. What role do prayer, Scripture, accountability, and Christian community play in helping us remain faithful?
Spiritual Application: Spiritual maturity is not measured by perfection, but by a continuing commitment to follow Christ, respond to His correction, and grow in His grace.
⸻
Personal Reflection
Take time to prayerfully consider the following questions.
1. Are there areas of my life where God is calling me to change my thinking or direction?
⸻
⸻
2. Am I allowing my past to influence how I see myself, or am I embracing my new identity in Christ?
⸻
⸻
3. What old habits, attitudes, or priorities might be preventing me from experiencing greater spiritual growth?
⸻
⸻
4. How can I more intentionally demonstrate my commitment to Jesus through my everyday life?
⸻

Devotional Reflection: Living the New Life
Scripture Focus: Romans 6:4
The message of repentance and baptism reminds us that salvation is not simply about escaping the consequences of sin. It is about entering into a restored relationship with God and experiencing the transforming power of Jesus Christ.
Many people desire a fresh start, but genuine change requires more than good intentions. It begins with surrendering our hearts to God and allowing His Word and Spirit to transform us from the inside out.
There will be moments when old attitudes, habits, and temptations attempt to pull us backward. But we must remember that our identity is no longer rooted in our former way of living. Through Christ, we have been given the opportunity to walk in freedom, forgiveness, and newness of life.
Repentance keeps our hearts responsive to God. Faith keeps our confidence anchored in Jesus. Baptism reminds us of the life we have surrendered and the new life we have received.
The challenge for every believer is to continually live out the transformation that began when we placed our faith in Jesus Christ.
A changed heart should produce a changed life.
Putting It Into Practice
* Examine your heart. Regularly ask God to reveal attitudes or behaviors that need to change.
* Renew your mind. Allow Scripture to shape your thoughts, beliefs, and decisions.
* Remember your identity. Refuse to let past failures define who you are in Christ.
* Walk in obedience. Let your faith be reflected in your actions and relationships.
* Remain faithful. Depend on God’s grace and the Holy Spirit as you continue growing spiritually.
⸻
Group Prayer Focus
As a group, pray for:
* Genuine repentance: Hearts that remain sensitive and responsive to God’s Word.
* Spiritual transformation: A deeper understanding of what it means to be a new creation in Christ.
* Bold faith: The courage to publicly identify with Jesus and share the hope of the Gospel.
* Continued growth: Strength to resist temptation, overcome old patterns, and remain faithful.
* Those seeking Christ: That people would respond to God’s invitation to receive forgiveness, salvation, and new life through Jesus.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of salvation and the new life we have through Jesus Christ. Help us recognize the areas of our lives that need to change and give us hearts that are willing to respond to Your truth. Teach us to leave behind the things that separate us from You and to embrace the freedom and purpose found in Christ. Renew our minds, strengthen our faith, and empower us through Your Holy Spirit to walk in obedience and newness of life. May our lives continually reflect Your grace, goodness, and transforming power. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
