WHAT IS WATER BAPTISM?
DCC Kids Discussion Guide & Devotional
Big Idea
Jesus saves us, and baptism shows others that we have decided to follow Him.
Scripture
Acts 10:43
“Whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.”
Acts 2:38
“Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ…”
What Is Baptism?
Baptism is a special way of showing everyone:
“I believe in Jesus, I belong to Jesus, and I want to follow Jesus!”
Going under the water represents our old life being buried with Jesus. Coming back up represents the new life Jesus gives us.
Read: Romans 6:3–4
Does the Water Save Us?
No. Jesus saves us!
We are saved because we put our faith and trust in Jesus.
The water itself cannot wash away our sins. Jesus died on the cross and rose again so our sins could be forgiven.
Ephesians 2:8: We are saved by grace through faith.
Baptism is something we do because we believe in Jesus and want to obey Him.
How Old Do You Have to Be?
The Bible does not give us a certain age when someone can be baptized.
Instead, the Bible talks about two important things:
Believe — Do you trust Jesus as your Savior?
Repent — Have you decided to turn away from sin and follow Jesus?
A child can truly love and trust Jesus. What matters is that baptism is your decision to follow Him.
What If I Was Baptized When I Was Little?
You do not automatically need to be baptized again just because you are older.
Ask yourself:
* Did I believe in Jesus?
* Did I understand that I wanted to follow Him?
* Was baptism my decision?
If the answer is yes, your age does not make your baptism less important.
But if you were baptized before you understood what it meant or before you personally chose to follow Jesus, you can choose to be baptized now as your own declaration of faith.
Talk About It
1. Who saves us—Jesus or the water?
2. What does baptism show other people?
3. What does it mean to repent?
4. Does the Bible give a certain age for baptism?
5. Why should someone who believes in Jesus want to be baptized?
Remember This
Jesus saves me. Baptism shows that I belong to Jesus.
Baptism does not make Jesus love you more. It does not earn your way into heaven.
It is a joyful way of saying:
“Jesus, I believe in You, I belong to You, and I want to follow You!”
Devotional — I Belong to Jesus
When you decide to follow Jesus, something amazing happens. You become part of God’s family.
Baptism is one way we show everyone what has happened inside our hearts.
Think of it like wearing a team jersey. The jersey does not make you part of the team, but it shows everyone which team you belong to.
In the same way, baptism does not save us—Jesus does. Baptism tells the world, “I belong to Jesus!”
If you believe in Jesus, keep following Him, learning about Him, and obeying Him every day.
Prayer
Jesus, thank You for loving me and saving me. Help me to trust You, follow You, and obey You. Give me courage to let others know that I belong to You. Help me understand what baptism means and when I am ready to take that step.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
