“And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, who also said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven?’”

DEVOTIONAL

There is a term in music called “shoegazing.” It describes musicians who spend much of their time looking down at their pedalboards instead of engaging with the audience and fully participating in the moment.

In a similar way, believers can become “sky gazers.”

The disciples had just watched Jesus ascend into heaven. They stood staring upward until two angels asked them:

“Why do you stand gazing up into heaven?”

Their desire to see Jesus was not wrong, but Jesus had already given them a mission.

They were not called to stand there indefinitely.

They had been told to wait for the power of the Holy Spirit—and then go.

Jesus said:

“You shall receive power… and you shall be witnesses.”

The power had a purpose.

The Holy Spirit was not given merely so believers could have spiritual experiences. He empowers the Church to fulfill the mission of Jesus.

We are called to keep our hearts focused on heaven while our hands are actively engaged in the work God has given us to do.

Colossians 3:1–2 tells us to set our minds on things above.

2 Timothy 4:5 tells us to fulfill our ministry.

Ephesians 5:15–16 tells us to redeem the time.

We must be heavenly minded and actively obedient.

The Kingdom of God was never intended to have an audience full of spectators.

God has called every believer onto the field.

1. OBEDIENCE RELEASES GOD’S POWER

What is it about laying hands on someone that heals them?

There is no magic in our hands.

The key is obedience.

God works through ordinary people who trust His Word and respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus modeled this kind of life.

John 5:19

“The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do…”

Jesus watched what the Father was doing and responded.

Our Christian life should operate in the same way.

Instead of beginning every day asking:

“How can I keep from doing something wrong today?”

Perhaps we should begin asking:

“Holy Spirit, what are You doing today, and how can I obey?”

Luke 6:46

“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?”

Lordship requires obedience.

James 4:17

“Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin.”

Disobedience is not only doing what God says is wrong.

Sometimes disobedience is failing to do what God has shown us is right.

Galatians 5:16

“Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”

Our primary focus should be walking with the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit will never lead us into sin.

He leads us toward Christ, obedience, righteousness, love, and good works.

DISCUSSION

1. What does it mean to you to “walk in the Spirit” in everyday life?
2. Have you ever felt the Holy Spirit prompting you to speak to someone, pray for someone, encourage someone, give, serve, or take some other step of obedience? What happened?
3. Why do you think fear of making a mistake sometimes keeps believers from stepping out in faith?
4. Which is more challenging for you personally: avoiding things you know are wrong, or actively doing the things you know God is asking you to do?

2. SPECTATORS OR PARTICIPANTS?

Sports fans often say:

“We made it to the playoffs!”

But the fans never stepped onto the field.

They did not throw a pass.

They did not score a touchdown.

They simply identified with the team.

The same mindset can develop in the Church.

We celebrate testimonies.

We watch revival videos.

We hear about healings.

We listen to stories of people being saved and delivered.

We admire what God is doing through someone else.

But eventually we must ask:

Am I watching the Kingdom, or participating in it?

Romans 8:37

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

Scripture does not call us admirers of conquerors.

It calls us more than conquerors.

Conquerors participate.

They step onto the field.

They obey God and trust Him with the results.

1. What are some ways Christians can unintentionally become spectators rather than participants?
2. Do you think modern Christian culture sometimes makes it easier to watch ministry than actually do ministry? Why?
3. Where do you believe God may be inviting you to move from observation into participation?
4. What would stepping onto the field look like for you this week?

3. YOU WERE CREATED FOR MORE

Ephesians 2:10

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

God has prepared assignments for your life.

There are:

* People you can encourage.
* Prayers you can pray.
* Broken hearts you can strengthen.
* People you can tell about Jesus.
* Needs you can help meet.
* Disciples you can help make.
* People who may experience the love of Christ because you were willing to obey.

There are people you can reach that your pastor may never reach.

There are people who may listen to you who would never walk into a church building.

God has strategically placed believers in families, workplaces, schools, neighborhoods, businesses, and communities because He intends to work through us there.

The Great Commission is not reserved only for apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers.

It is the calling of every believer.

You have a mission—therefore, you are a missionary wherever God sends you.

1. Who has God placed within your normal circle of influence?
2. How could you intentionally represent Jesus to those people this week?
3. Why is it important to understand that ministry does not only happen inside a church building?
4. What gifts, experiences, relationships, or opportunities has God already placed in your hands that He could use?

4. YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN EQUIPPED

Sometimes believers keep asking God to give them what Scripture says He has already provided in Christ.

The message of the Gospel is not simply:

“Try harder until God finally gives you enough.”

Instead, Scripture repeatedly points us toward what God has already accomplished through Jesus.

1. GOD HAS ALREADY PROVIDED

You already have what you need in Christ to begin walking in His purpose.
2 Peter 1:3

2. YOU ARE ALREADY BLESSED

Stop trying to earn what God has already given you in Christ.
Ephesians 1:3

3. THE WORK IS FINISHED

Jesus completed the work; now live from what He accomplished.
John 19:30

4. FIGHT FROM VICTORY

You are not fighting to earn victory; you stand in what Christ has accomplished.
1 Peter 2:24

5. THE POWER IS AT WORK IN YOU

The resurrection power of God is toward those who believe.
Ephesians 1:19–20

6. ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT YOU HAVE

Faith becomes effective as we recognize the good things that are ours in Christ.
Philemon 6

7. GRACE PROVIDES—FAITH RECEIVES

God provides by grace; we receive and respond through faith.
Ephesians 2:8–9

8. BELIEVE BEFORE YOU SEE

Faith trusts what God has said before circumstances change.
Mark 11:24

9. RENEW YOUR MIND

Stop defining yourself by your past and begin seeing yourself according to who you are in Christ.
Romans 12:2

10. RELEASE WHAT GOD HAS DEPOSITED

Christ lives in you so that His life can be expressed through you.
Galatians 2:20

11. GRACE PROVIDES—FAITH ACTS

You are blessed, equipped, and empowered in Christ.

Now step out and live like it.

1. Which of these eleven truths stands out most strongly to you right now? Why?
2. Are you asking God for something Scripture indicates He has already provided in Christ?
3. How does knowing you are already equipped change the way you approach ministry?
4. What is the difference between trying to earn God’s power and responding in faith to what He has already provided?

5. GRACE PROVIDES—FAITH ACTS

Because God has provided, empowered, and equipped us, there should be a response:

OBEDIENCE.

We do not obey to convince God to provide.

We obey because He has provided.

We do not step out in faith hoping that someday God might empower His Church.

Jesus said:

Acts 1:8

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…”

The power was given for a purpose.

We have been empowered to become witnesses.

Grace provides.

Faith receives.

Obedience acts.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

Take a moment and quietly consider these questions:

What has God already told me to do that I have not acted upon?

Where have I allowed fear to keep me in the stands?

Who is one person God may want me to encourage, pray for, serve, or share Jesus with?

What step of obedience can I take this week?

THIS WEEK’S CHALLENGE

Do not simply ask God to use you.

Make yourself available.

Every morning this week, pray:

“Holy Spirit, what are You doing today, and how can I obey?”

Then pay attention.

Look for opportunities to:

* Pray for someone.
* Encourage someone.
* Share your testimony.
* Meet a practical need.
* Invite someone to church.
* Speak about Jesus.
* Serve someone.
* Forgive someone.
* Give generously.
* Lay hands on someone who needs prayer.
* Follow whatever biblical prompting the Holy Spirit places on your heart.

Do not worry about producing the result.

Your responsibility is obedience.

God is responsible for the outcome.

CLOSING CHALLENGE

The angels’ question still speaks to the Church:

“Why do you stand gazing up into heaven?”

Why remain a spectator when God has called you to participate?

Why stay in the stands when He has invited you onto the field?

Why keep asking God to give you what He has already provided?

Why spend your life waiting for God to use you when Jesus has already told His Church to go?

Jesus is coming again.

We should look forward to His return.

We should live ready for His return.

But until He comes, may He find us:

Obeying.
Serving.
Witnessing.
Praying.
Loving.
Healing.
Encouraging.
Making disciples.
Advancing His Kingdom.

Stop gazing. Start walking.

Stop waiting. Start obeying.

Stop merely watching what God is doing through others. Become an active participant in what God wants to do through you.

Some of the greatest miracles begin with one simple act of obedience.

When Jesus returns, will He find you watching the Kingdom—or working in it?

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, thank You for calling us out of darkness and into Your Kingdom. Thank You that through Jesus You have saved us, blessed us, equipped us, and given us the Holy Spirit. Forgive us for the times we have remained spectators when You were calling us to participate. Give us ears to hear Your voice, eyes to recognize what You are doing, and courage to obey when You lead us. Help us to walk in the Spirit, redeem the time, love people well, share the Gospel boldly, pray with faith, serve faithfully, and fulfill the ministry You have given us. May we not merely watch what You are doing through others, but become willing vessels through whom Your Kingdom can advance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
