SMALL GROUP DEVOTIONAL & DISCUSSION GUIDE
NO EXCUSES!
Don’t Wait for Perfect Conditions to Do What God Has Called You to Do!
Scripture Focus: Ecclesiastes 3:1–2; 11:4; Ephesians 5:16–17
Key Scripture — Ecclesiastes 11:4 (NLT)
“Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest.”
OPENING DEVOTIONAL
The Time to Act Is Now!
Have you ever felt God prompting you to do something, but instead of responding, you found yourself coming up with reasons to wait?
Maybe you didn’t feel qualified, the timing seemed inconvenient, or you were waiting for circumstances to improve. Perhaps you convinced yourself that you would get involved, serve, give, or take a step of faith when life became less complicated.
The problem is that perfect conditions rarely come.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 reminds us that a farmer who waits for perfect weather will never plant and, consequently, will never harvest. The same principle applies to our spiritual lives. If we wait until we feel completely prepared, confident, or comfortable before obeying God, we may miss the very opportunities He has placed before us.
Faith doesn’t require perfect conditions. Faith requires trusting God enough to take the next step.
Jesus demonstrated this in John 9 when He encountered a man who had been blind from birth. While His disciples focused on identifying the cause of the man’s condition, Jesus focused on the opportunity to reveal God’s power through healing.
Jesus understood something we often forget: there is work to be done, and our opportunities to accomplish it are not unlimited.
In Ephesians 5:16–17, Paul encourages believers to make the most of every opportunity and understand what the Lord wants them to do.
God has given each of us spiritual gifts, abilities, resources, and opportunities to serve His Kingdom. Yet we can become so consumed with what we cannot do, what we don’t have, or why the timing isn’t right that we overlook what God has already placed in our hands.
The truth is that excuses can become obstacles to obedience.
Throughout Scripture, we find people who initially struggled with God’s calling. Moses questioned his ability to speak. Jonah ran from his assignment. Others allowed fear, comfort, or personal priorities to interfere with their willingness to follow God.
But God isn’t looking for perfect people with perfect circumstances. He is looking for willing hearts.
Every deed sows a seed!
Our attitudes, actions, and words influence the people around us. When we serve with joy, we encourage others. When we step forward in faith, we demonstrate trust in God. But when we continually complain, resist, or make excuses, we can discourage others from stepping into their own calling.
Jesus said in Luke 6:46, “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?”
True discipleship goes beyond acknowledging Jesus as Lord. It means allowing His Word and His Spirit to guide our decisions and actions.
There will always be reasons to delay. There will always be competing priorities, distractions, and challenges. But there will also be opportunities to love, serve, encourage, give, pray, and make a difference.
The question isn’t whether we have an excuse. The question is whether we are willing to obey.
God has already given us grace to serve one another in love. Our responsibility is to respond with faith, willingness, and obedience.
Don’t wait for tomorrow to do what God is calling you to do today.
No more excuses. Say, “Yes, Lord!”
