DCC Devotionals:  Real Freedom
By Dr. Don Vess

— John 8:31-32 (NLT)

Today’s Reading
•Psalm 2:1-4 – The futility of rebellion and God’s unshakable reign
•John 8:31-47 – Only the Son can break sin’s chains
•Genesis 3:1-5 – The first lie that promised “freedom” but brought bondage
•Romans 6:12-18; 8:1-2 – Grace releases us to live for God
•Galatians 5:1, 13 – Stay free—and serve in love
•2 Peter 1:3-6 – Divine “supplements” for victorious living
•1 Timothy 6:11-12 – Fight the good fight of faith
•Colossians 2:14-15 – Christ has disarmed every spiritual enemy

Read each passage slowly. Let the words wash over you before you read the devotion below.

Devotional

This week the United States celebrated 249 years of national freedom. Yet standing amid the fireworks and flags, you can almost feel chains rattling in unseen places. Political liberty is priceless—but if hearts remain captive to sin, are we truly free?

The psalmist pictures nations shouting, “Let us break their chains … free ourselves from slavery to God” (Ps 2:3). Humanity has always bristled at God’s loving boundaries, convinced they stifle rather than safeguard. Jesus confronts the same mindset in John 8. Religious leaders insist, “We have never been slaves!”—all while plotting murder. Christ replies, “Everyone who sins is a slave of sin … but if the Son sets you free, you are truly free” (vv. 34-36).

The serpent’s lie in Eden hasn’t changed: Disobey and you’ll be like God. Eve believed, Adam followed, and freedom evaporated. Since that moment, every “freedom” purchased outside God’s will carries hidden shackles. But the cross has reversed Eden’s curse—“He canceled the record of charges … and disarmed the rulers and authorities” (Col 2:14-15). Sin no longer has rightful claim to those in Christ.

Freedom, therefore, is not the right to do whatever I want; it is the power to become who God created me to be. Grace doesn’t excuse bondage; it empowers liberation. Romans 6 calls us to “choose to obey God” and offer every faculty—mind, tongue, body—as an instrument of righteousness. Galatians 5 warns us to guard that liberty, refusing any yoke (whether legalism or license) that drags us back to slavery.

How do we fight for this interior freedom? Peter prescribes “supplements”: faith fortified with moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love (2 Pet 1:5-6). Paul urges Timothy—and us—to “pursue righteousness… fight the good fight of true faith” (1 Tim 6:11-12). Freedom is a gift already won, yet it must be actively defended in thought, habit, and desire.

Sylvia Plath observed, “Your room is not your prison, you are.” If walls aren’t the real cells, then keys aren’t made of metal but of truth. Jesus insists: remain in His teaching, and truth will unlock every door.

Today, as you remember the cost of national liberty, ask: Am I walking in the full liberty Christ died to give me? The battlefront is the mind, but the victory has been secured by the cross. Step into that victory, and help someone else find the same open door.

Reflection Questions
1.Where do you sense lingering chains—habits, thoughts, or fears—that contradict Christ’s promise of freedom?
2.Which of Peter’s “supplements” (2 Pet 1:5-6) do you most need to add to your faith this week?
3.How can you use your freedom “to serve one another in love” (Gal 5:13) in a practical way today?

Prayer

Father, thank You that in Jesus the chains of sin have been shattered.
Reveal any place where I still live like a captive.
Strengthen me with Your Spirit to resist deception, obey Your Word, and walk in the glorious freedom of Your grace.
May my life point others to the Son who alone sets people free.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Living It Out
•Memorize John 8:31-32; recite it each time you feel tempted or condemned.
•Audit your inputs: replace one media source that feeds fear or lust with a daily reading of Romans 6 or Galatians 5.
•Serve intentionally: choose one act of love this week that costs you convenience—freedom expressed in self-giving.

Communion Moment
When you next partake of the Lord’s Supper, remember that His body broken and blood poured out secured your liberty. Receive afresh the forgiveness of Isaiah 53:5 and the healing of 1 Peter 2:24, proclaiming, “By His wounds, I am free.”

May you stand firm in the freedom Christ has earned, celebrating a liberty that no earthly power can grant or revoke.
