Theme: The Importance of Fellowship and the Church Body

Key Scriptures:
Hebrews 10:25 & 1 Corinthians 12:12–27. 


Opening Thought
Church is more than a building, a Sunday service, or an event we attend. Scripture describes the Church as a body—many different people, with different gifts, personalities, abilities, and callings, joined together under Christ.
Every member matters.

We need one another. We encourage one another, strengthen one another, serve one another, pray for one another, and sometimes carry one another through difficult seasons.
A healthy church is not simply a church where people attend. It is a church where people belong, connect, grow, serve, and care for one another.
Today we’re asking a simple but important question:
Why Church?

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION
1. Why is church important?
When someone asks, “Why do I need church?”, how would you answer?
Discuss:
* What can we experience in a church family that is difficult to experience by ourselves?
* Why do you think God designed Christianity to be lived in community?
* What are some benefits you have personally experienced from being connected to a church?

Read: Hebrews 10:25 "...not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."


Fellowship is not simply about being present in the same room. It is about encouraging, strengthening, and walking with one another.

2. The Church Is a Body

Read: 1 Corinthians 12:12–27 

"For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.  For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink [a]into one Spirit. For in fact the body is not one member but many.

If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body?  And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body?  If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling?  But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.  And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.”  No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.  And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty,  but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, that there should be no [b]schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually."


Paul compares the Church to a human body. A body has many different parts, but every part is necessary.
Discuss:
* Why do you think Paul chose the human body as a picture of the Church?
* What happens to a physical body when one part is injured or stops functioning?
* How does that illustration apply to the local church?
* Why should we avoid thinking, “The church doesn’t really need me”?

Key Thought: You may not do everything, but there is something God has given you to contribute.

3. What Is Your Contribution?
Every person brings something to the church body.
It might be:
* serving
* encouraging
* praying
* teaching
* giving
* hospitality
* leadership
* worship
* helping
* listening
* showing compassion
* simply being present when someone needs you

Discuss:
* What gifts, abilities, experiences, or passions has God placed in you?
* How are you currently using them to strengthen others?
* Is there something you believe God may be calling you to contribute that you haven’t stepped into yet?
Personal Question:
If I were missing from the body, what contribution would be missing with me?

4. When One Hurts, We All Hurt
Read: 1 Corinthians 12:26
When one part of your physical body hurts, the rest of your body notices.
The Church should work the same way.
Discuss:
* What does it practically mean to “suffer with” another member of the church?
* How can we become better at recognizing when someone around us is hurting?
* What are some practical ways the church can respond when someone experiences grief, sickness, discouragement, financial difficulty, or another crisis?
* Why is isolation especially dangerous when someone is hurting?

Key Thought: A healthy church doesn’t just notice who is present—it notices who is hurting and who is missing.

WHAT DOES A HEALTHY CHURCH BODY LOOK LIKE?
Being part of a church is important, but we should desire more than simply being part of a church body.
We should desire to become a healthy church body.
Discuss:
What characteristics should describe a healthy church?
Consider:
* Love
* Unity
* Prayer
* Biblical truth
* Grace
* Accountability
* Forgiveness
* Fellowship
* Service
* Generosity
* Compassion
* Spiritual growth
* Evangelism
* Using our gifts
* Caring for one another

Question:
Which of these areas do you think is especially important for maintaining a healthy church family?

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A PART GOES MISSING?
Imagine trying to walk without a foot, see without an eye, or work without a hand.
The body may continue functioning, but something important is missing.
The same can happen within the Church.
Discuss:
* How does the church body suffer when people disconnect or stop contributing?
* How can one person’s absence affect people they may not even realize they influence?
* What happens when only a small percentage of a church does most of the serving?
* How can we encourage people who have disconnected without judging or condemning them?

Key Thought: Your presence matters. Your gifts matter. Your encouragement matters. Your service matters.

Someone else in the body may need exactly what God has placed inside of you.

ATTENDING vs. BELONGING
There is a difference between going to church and belonging to a church family.
Discuss:
* What is the difference between attendance and involvement?
* What does it mean to truly belong to a church family?
* Can someone attend church regularly but still remain disconnected?
* What helps transform a crowd into a community?
Consider This
Instead of only asking:
“What can my church do for me?”
What if we also asked:
“What can God do through me for my church family?”

PERSONAL REFLECTION
Go around the table and allow everyone who is comfortable to answer one of these:
What is one thing you appreciate about your church family?
Who in the church has made a difference in your life?
Where do you believe you fit within the body?
What is one way you could become more connected or involved?
Who might God be asking you to encourage, serve, or reconnect with?

THE CHALLENGE
This week:
SHOW UP.
Not just physically—show up for someone.
CONNECT.
Have a meaningful conversation with someone in the church family.
ENCOURAGE.
Contact someone who may be discouraged or who you haven’t seen recently.
CONTRIBUTE.
Ask God:
“Lord, what have You placed in me that can strengthen Your body?”
Then look for an opportunity to use it.

Final Thought
The Church works best when every part recognizes:
I need the body—and the body needs me.
We were never designed to follow Jesus alone.
God has joined us together so that we can worship together, grow together, serve together, celebrate together, and carry one another through difficult seasons.
When one hurts, we hurt.
When one rejoices, we rejoice.
When each part does its part, the whole body becomes stronger.
We are not simply people who attend the same church.
We are the Body of Christ.

Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for placing us in Your family. Help us never to take for granted the people You have placed around us. Teach us to recognize the gifts You have placed within each person and the contribution You have called each of us to make.
Make us a healthy church body—full of love, grace, truth, unity, compassion, and genuine fellowship. Help us notice when someone is hurting, encourage those who are discouraged, welcome those who feel alone, and use the gifts You have given us to strengthen one another.
Show each of us where we belong and how we can serve Your body faithfully.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
