Take What He Has Promised!

DCC Small Group Discussion Guide: Take What He Has Promised!

Scripture Focus

Joshua 14:6–15

Key Verse

Joshua 14:12
“So give me the hill country that the Lord promised me…”

Opening Thought

Caleb’s story reminds us that God’s promises are worth holding on to. Even after forty-five years, Caleb’s faith had not faded. He remembered what God had spoken, believed what God had promised, and was still ready to take possession of it.

The promise may be delayed, but it is not denied. Giants may stand in the way, but they are not greater than the God who made the promise.

Icebreaker

Share about a time when you had to wait longer than expected for something important. What helped you stay patient?

Discussion Questions

Follow-up:
What are some ways we can keep God’s promises in front of us?

2. Caleb saw the promise, not just the problem.

The other spies saw giants and walls. Caleb saw what God had promised.

Question:
What are some “giants” people face today that can make God’s promises feel impossible?

Follow-up:
How can fear change the way we see our circumstances?

3. Delay does not cancel the promise.

Caleb waited forty-five years before receiving what had been promised.

Question:
Why do delays sometimes cause people to question God’s faithfulness?

Follow-up:
How can we stay faithful while we are waiting?

4. God’s promises must be held by faith.

Faith agrees with what God has said even before the promise is seen.

Read:
1 Corinthians 1:20
“For as many as are the promises of God, in Christ they are all answered ‘Yes.’ So through Him we say our ‘Amen’ to the glory of God.”

Question:
What does it mean to say “Amen” to God’s promises?

5. Giants do not cancel the promise.

Question:
How does knowing God is with us change the way we face opposition?

Follow-up:
What is one area where you need to stop being intimidated and start trusting God?

6. God has the power to fulfill what He promised.

People may fail to keep promises, but God never fails.

Read:
Joshua 21:45
“Not one of the good promises which the Lord made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.”

Question:
How have you seen God prove His faithfulness in your life?

7. Faith receives before it sees.

Faith is not blind hope. Faith is confidence in the character and word of God.

Question:
What is the difference between wishful thinking and biblical faith?

Follow-up:
How can prayer help strengthen our confidence in God’s promises?

8. Abraham believed when it looked impossible.

Abraham trusted God even when the promise seemed beyond natural possibility.

Read:
Romans 4:20–21
“He never stopped believing God’s promise… because he was mighty in faith and convinced that God had all the power He needed to fulfill His promises.”

Question:
What does Abraham’s example teach us about trusting God when circumstances look impossible?

Application

This week, choose one promise from Scripture to hold on to in prayer.

Write it down.
Pray it daily.
Speak it over your situation.
Share it with someone who needs encouragement.

Ask yourself:

What promise am I holding on to?
What giant do I need to face with faith?
What step of obedience can I take this week?

Group Prayer Focus

Pray for:

Faith to believe God’s promises.
Strength to keep trusting during delays.
Courage to face the giants.
A renewed confidence that God is faithful.
Grace to encourage one another and not give up.

Closing Declaration

I will not give up on what God has promised.
I will not be intimidated by giants.
I will not allow delay to destroy my faith.
God is faithful.
His promises are true.
What He has spoken, He is able to fulfill.
I will take what He has promised!
