The Healing Power of the Word

The Healing Power of the Word
By Don Vess

Scripture Focus
“He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”
— Psalm 107:20 NKJV

Devotional Message
God has always chosen to work through His Word. From the very beginning, Scripture tells us, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). Jesus Himself is the Living Word, sent by the Father to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10). Through Him, we are made whole—spirit, soul, and body.

The Bible teaches us that words are not powerless—they carry life or death (Proverbs 18:21). Our salvation, deliverance, and healing are tied to what we believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths (Romans 10:9–10). Jesus said, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life” (John 6:63). When we fill our hearts with the Word of God, our mouths begin to speak life, faith, and healing.

All through Scripture we see the healing power of God’s Word at work:
•The Roman centurion believed Jesus only had to speak the word, and his servant would be healed (Luke 7:7).
•Naaman, though reluctant at first, was healed of leprosy when he obeyed the prophetic word and dipped in the Jordan River (2 Kings 5).
•Blind men received their sight because they believed Jesus could heal them and confessed their faith openly (Matthew 9:27–29).
•Peter declared healing to the lame man at the temple gate: “In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk”—and the man walked (Acts 3:6).
•Paul spoke to a crippled man in Lystra, and by faith he was healed (Acts 14:9–10).

God’s Word has not lost its power. Isaiah 55:11 promises: “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

Healing may come instantly, as when Jesus spoke, or progressively, as when Hezekiah applied the fig ointment in obedience (2 Kings 20). But in every case, faith in the Word of God, spoken and acted upon, brings healing.

Reflection
•Do I believe that God’s Word is alive and powerful in my life today?
•Am I speaking life over myself and others, or am I letting doubt cancel my faith?
•What promises of God’s Word can I declare daily over my health, family, and circumstances?

Prayer
Father, I thank You that Your Word is alive, powerful, and settled forever in heaven. Thank You for sending Jesus, the Living Word, to bring me salvation, healing, and wholeness. I declare today that by His stripes I am healed. Help me to guard my heart, fill my mind with Your truth, and let my mouth speak words of faith that bring life. Strengthen my belief so that I may walk in the fullness of Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Declaration
“I am healed in Jesus’ name. By His Word and by His stripes, I receive life, health, and wholeness today!”

Daily Healing Declarations

? Speak these out loud each day in faith:
•Jesus, You were wounded for my transgressions, bruised for my iniquities. The chastisement of my peace was upon You, and by Your stripes I am healed (Isaiah 53:5).
•I declare that God has sent His Word and healed me (Psalm 107:20).
•I believe that by faith, healing belongs to me through Jesus Christ.
•I refuse to let my words cancel my faith. I speak life, not death.
•I declare that sickness has no power over me. My body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead gives life to my mortal body (Romans 8:11).
•I believe Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). The Jesus who healed then, still heals today.
•I will not be moved by what I see or feel. I walk by faith, and faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
•I declare: “In the name of Jesus Christ, I am healed, I am whole, I am restored!”

? End with praise:
“Thank You, Lord, that Your Word is settled in heaven and active in my life today. I receive my healing now, in Jesus’ name. Amen!”

7-Day Devotional Plan: The Healing Power of the Word

Day 1 – Sent to Heal

Scripture: “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” — Psalm 107:20 NKJV

Teaching: God has always chosen to send His Word as the means of deliverance. From creation, to the prophets, to Jesus the Living Word, God reveals Himself and His power through His Word. Healing begins when we believe that God has already sent His Word for us.

Reflection: Do I truly believe that God’s Word is enough to bring healing and life into my situation?

Prayer: Lord, thank You for sending Your Word to heal me. I receive it today with faith and gratitude. Amen.

Day 2 – The Living Word

Scripture: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1

Teaching: Jesus is not only a healer—He is the Word made flesh. When He speaks, sickness must bow, demons must flee, and brokenness must be restored. His words are Spirit and life.

Reflection: Do I see Jesus as the Living Word actively working in my life today, not just in history?

Prayer: Jesus, You are the Word of life. Speak into my heart today and let Your Word bring healing to every part of me. Amen.

Day 3 – The Power of Confession

Scripture: “…if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” — Romans 10:9 NKJV

Teaching: Salvation and healing both involve believing and confessing. Words are powerful—what we speak shapes what we live. Life and death are in the power of the tongue.

Reflection: Are my words aligning with God’s truth, or are they feeding doubt and fear?

Prayer: Father, help me guard my tongue and speak only what agrees with Your Word. Let my confession bring life and healing. Amen.

Day 4 – Just Say the Word

Scripture: “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed.” — Matthew 8:8 NKJV

Teaching: The Roman centurion understood the authority of Jesus’ Word. Healing didn’t depend on rituals or appearances—it depended on believing the Word spoken. Jesus marveled at his faith.

Reflection: Do I trust that Jesus’ Word is enough, or am I waiting for a sign or feeling before I believe?

Prayer: Lord, I choose to believe like the centurion. Just speak Your Word, and I know I will be healed. Amen.

Day 5 – Obedience and Healing

Scripture: “So he went down and dipped seven times in the Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.” — 2 Kings 5:14 NKJV

Teaching: Naaman’s healing required obedience to God’s Word through the prophet Elisha. Sometimes healing requires not only faith but also action. Faith without works is dead.

Reflection: Am I willing to act in obedience to God’s Word, even when it seems simple or unusual?

Prayer: Lord, give me the humility to obey Your Word fully, knowing that healing follows obedience. Amen.

Day 6 – Faith That Sees Beyond Sight

Scripture: “Because of your faith, it will happen.” — Matthew 9:29 NLT

Teaching: The blind men received their sight because of faith. Faith doesn’t come from feelings or seeing results—it comes by hearing the Word of God and holding on to it.

Reflection: Do I base my faith on what I see and feel, or on the unchanging Word of God?

Prayer: Lord, help me to walk by faith and not by sight. Strengthen my heart to believe Your Word above my circumstances. Amen.

Day 7 – Declare Your Healing

Scripture: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8 NKJV

Teaching: The same Jesus who healed in the Gospels is healing today. His Word is settled in heaven, and His promises are always “Yes” and “Amen.” Our response is to declare them with boldness and faith.

Reflection: What promises of God can I boldly declare over my life today?

Prayer & Declaration: Lord, I declare that by the stripes of Jesus I am healed. I believe Your Word is true, alive, and working in me. I speak health, wholeness, and life over myself and my family in Jesus’ name. Amen!
