DCC Devotionals: The Power of Unity
By Dr Don Vess
Scripture Focus:
“I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.”
—1 Corinthians 1:10 (NLT)
⸻
Devotional Thought:
Pentecost Sunday reminds us of the moment when the early church was birthed in unity and filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4). The believers were “with one accord in one place,” and in that atmosphere of unity, the Spirit moved in power. Unity isn’t just a feel-good idea—it is a spiritual force that invites God’s presence and releases His power among His people.
Even in Genesis, at the Tower of Babel, God Himself acknowledged the sheer potential of unity—even among those with unrighteous intent:
“Behold, they are one people… now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them.” (Genesis 11:6, NASB)
If that kind of power is possible among the ungodly, how much more should we expect among believers filled with the Spirit?
But let’s be clear: unity is not uniformity. It’s not simply getting a group of people in the same room. It is aligning hearts and purposes with the will of God and with one another. Like the body of Christ described in 1 Corinthians 12:12, many parts make one whole—diverse, yet united.
Unity is fragile. The enemy seeks to destroy it the same way God disrupted Babel: through miscommunication, offense, and relational breakdown. But the Church is called to be different. We’re called to preserve unity by living out the fruit of the Spirit—humility, gentleness, patience, and forbearance (Ephesians 4:2-3). Sometimes, yes, that means putting up with difficult people, showing grace when it’s hard, and choosing love over ego.
Let this be our prayer today:
That we would be “perfectly united in mind and thought” (1 Corinthians 1:10), striving not just to achieve unity but to maintain it. That we would shake things up—not for our own glory, but for God’s, as we move forward together in His purpose.
⸻
Reflection Questions:
1.Is there any relationship in your life that needs healing to restore unity?
2.Are you contributing to unity in your church, family, or ministry—or unknowingly hindering it?
3.How can you take steps today to live out humility, gentleness, and patience?
⸻
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of unity and the power it brings when Your people come together in one mind and purpose. Heal what is broken in our relationships. Teach us to value others above ourselves and to walk in humility, gentleness, and love. May our unity reflect Your nature and draw others to Christ. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
⸻
Action Step:
Reach out to someone this week with whom there may have been miscommunication or tension. Ask for clarity, seek forgiveness if needed, and commit to walking in unity. Let love lead.
⸻
Closing Thought:
Unity isn’t just a goal; it’s a spiritual calling. When we fight for unity, we fight for the heart of God’s Church—and we can be sure the earth will shake under our feet when we move together in one accord.
