DCC Devotionals: Bought and Paid For
By Don Vess

Key Verse:
“Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight.”
—Psalm 32:1 (NLT)

Devotional Thought:

We live in a world where people constantly try to earn acceptance—at work, in relationships, and even with God. But Scripture makes it plain: “No one is righteous—not even one” (Romans 3:10), and “we all fall short of God’s glorious standard” (Romans 3:23).

And yet, the heart of the gospel is this: God has already paid the price for our sin. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are redeemed, forgiven, and set free—not because we earned it, but because Jesus bought it on our behalf.

Illustration:

There’s a powerful story of General Robert E. Lee attending a church service after the Civil War. A young Black man—once a slave—knelt at the altar in repentance. In a bold and compassionate act, Gen. Lee knelt beside him, guiding him to Christ. Though criticized for “lowering himself,” Lee responded, “The ground is level at the foot of the cross.”

That is the truth of redemption—no one stands higher or lower. We all come in need. And Jesus has made the way for all.

Spiritual Reality:

Many believers still struggle to live in the freedom Christ purchased. They feel bound by shame, guilt, or condemnation—as if they are still lying in the ditch with ropes around their legs. But those ropes are broken. The chains are gone. The work is finished!

Galatians 3:13 says: “Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When He was hung on the cross, He took upon Himself the curse for our wrongdoing.”

The Greek word for “redeem” (exagoridzō) means to buy someone out of the slave market permanently. That’s what Jesus did for us—bought us out, to set us free, forever.

Takeaway:

You don’t have to work to “get free.”
In Christ, you already are.
You just need to walk in that freedom.

Reflection Questions:
1.Are there areas in your life where you still feel bound or ashamed?
2.What does it mean to you personally that Jesus paid the full price for your redemption?
3.Are you living like someone who is truly free? If not, what might be holding you back?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the price Jesus paid to redeem me. Thank You that I don’t have to earn Your love or forgiveness. Help me walk in the freedom You’ve already given. Set my heart free from shame and teach me to live like someone who has been bought, paid for, and made new. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Scriptures to Meditate On This Week:
•Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
•2 Corinthians 5:21 – For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin…
•Galatians 3:13-14 – Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law…
•John 8:36 – So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.
