WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING!
Devotional & Small Group Discussion Guide
Key Scripture
1 Peter 2:11 KJV
“Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.”
⸻
DEVOTIONAL
Have you ever been so distracted that you nearly walked into something—or someone?
Usually the response is simple:
“Watch where you’re going!”
That same warning applies spiritually.
Peter wrote to believers who were learning how to follow Jesus while living in a culture that constantly pulled in the opposite direction. They were surrounded by temptation, old habits, sinful lifestyles, and values that did not honor God.
Their challenge was to live differently without withdrawing from the world completely.
That challenge is still ours today.
We are called to live in the world without becoming like the world.
Peter says, “I beseech you…”
The word carries the idea of someone coming closely alongside another person and urgently pleading with them to listen.
This is not casual advice.
Peter is saying:
Pay attention. This matters.
He calls believers “strangers and pilgrims.”
A stranger is someone living in a place that is not truly his home.
A pilgrim is someone passing through on the way to another destination.
As followers of Jesus, we live here, work here, raise families here, build relationships here, and serve people here—but this world is not our final home.
Our citizenship is in heaven.
That means we cannot let the values of the world determine the direction of our lives.
⸻
PUT DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND SIN
Peter tells believers to:
“Abstain from fleshly lusts…”
To abstain means to deliberately stay away from something.
This is important because temptation often becomes stronger when we keep getting close to it.
Sometimes we pray:
“God, help me resist temptation,”
while continuing to stand right beside the thing that keeps tempting us.
Wisdom says:
Create distance.
If something repeatedly pulls you away from God, you may need to stop asking how close you can get to it and start asking how far away from it you need to be.
⸻
SIN IS AT WAR WITH YOUR SOUL
Peter says fleshly desires “war against the soul.”
That language is intentional.
Sin is not harmless.
Temptation is not neutral.
Unchecked desires do not simply stay where they are.
They seek greater influence.
They try to take territory in our minds, emotions, relationships, decisions, and habits.
Paul gives similar language in 2 Corinthians 10:3–5, reminding us that our weapons are spiritual and powerful through God.
One of the greatest battlegrounds is the mind.
That is why we must learn to recognize wrong thoughts, reject lies, and bring our thinking into agreement with Christ.
⸻
KEEP YOUR HEAD ON A SWIVEL
When you are in an unfamiliar environment, you naturally become more alert.
You pay closer attention.
You notice who is around you.
You know where the exits are.
You are conscious of where you are walking.
Spiritually, we should live with that same awareness.
Ask yourself regularly:
Where are my thoughts taking me?
What is influencing me?
What habits am I forming?
What am I allowing into my heart?
Am I moving closer to Jesus or drifting away from Him?
Spiritual drift usually happens gradually.
Very few people wake up one day and intentionally decide to walk far from God.
More often, they simply stop watching where they are going.
⸻
LISTEN TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
The good news is that we are not navigating life alone.
The Holy Spirit is our Helper.
He warns us.
He convicts us.
He reminds us.
He directs us.
He strengthens us.
Sometimes His voice sounds like a quiet inward check:
“Don’t go there.”
“Don’t say that.”
“Turn that off.”
“Walk away.”
“Forgive them.”
“Call them.”
“Pay attention.”
Learning to follow Jesus means learning to recognize and respond to those promptings.
⸻
DON’T LET THE WORLD SHAPE YOU
Paul writes in Romans 12:1–2 that we are not to be conformed to this world, but transformed through the renewing of our minds.
The world is always trying to shape us.
Advertising shapes desires.
Culture shapes values.
Social media shapes expectations.
Entertainment shapes thinking.
Relationships can shape priorities.
But the Word of God and the Spirit of God must have the strongest voice in our lives.
Transformation begins when we allow God to change the way we think.
⸻
MAIN TRUTH
You will eventually arrive wherever your daily choices are taking you.
So watch where you are going.
Guard your heart.
Guard your thoughts.
Create distance from temptation.
Listen to the Holy Spirit.
Remember who you are.
Remember where you are going.
And keep your eyes on Jesus.
⸻
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION
Opening Question
Have you ever been so distracted that you walked into something, missed a turn, or went the wrong direction?
What happened?
⸻
Read Together
1 Peter 2:11
Discussion
1. Why do you think Peter describes believers as “strangers and pilgrims”?
How should knowing that heaven is our true home affect the way we live now?
⸻
2. What are some ways Christians can live in the world without becoming like the world?
Where is that balance sometimes difficult?
⸻
3. Peter tells believers to “abstain” from fleshly desires.
Why is creating distance from temptation sometimes wiser than simply trying to resist it?
Can you think of practical examples?
⸻
4. What does it mean that sinful desires “war against the soul”?
In what areas of life do you think this battle most often takes place?
⸻
5. Read 2 Corinthians 10:3–5.
What does it mean to “take every thought captive”?
How can we practically replace wrong thinking with truth?
⸻
6. What are some warning signs that someone may be spiritually drifting?
What helps us recognize drift before we get too far off course?
⸻
7. How does the Holy Spirit help us “watch where we are going”?
Have you ever sensed the Holy Spirit warning, redirecting, or prompting you?
⸻
8. Read Romans 12:1–2.
What are some ways the world attempts to shape the way we think?
How does Scripture renew our minds?
⸻
PERSONAL REFLECTION
Take a moment and quietly ask yourself:
Where am I headed right now?
Is there an area of my life where I have become distracted?
⸻
Is there something I need to create distance from?
⸻
Is there a thought pattern I need to bring into obedience to Christ?
⸻
Is the Holy Spirit warning or redirecting me in any area?
⸻
What is one practical step I can take this week?
⸻
⸻
GROUP CHALLENGE
This week, before making an important decision, stop and ask:
“Where will this lead me?”
Will this move me closer to Christ?
Will this strengthen or weaken my spiritual life?
Will this decision help me become who God has called me to be?
Will this choice move me toward or away from God’s purpose?
⸻
MEMORY VERSE
1 Peter 2:11 KJV
“Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.”
⸻
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord, help us to stay spiritually alert and to watch where we are going. Give us wisdom to recognize anything that would pull us away from You. Help us create distance from temptation, take wrong thoughts captive, and listen closely to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Renew our minds through Your Word and remind us that we are pilgrims passing through this world. Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and help us stay faithful to the path You have placed before us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
