Remembering His Sacrifice, Examining Our Hearts, and Honoring His Body
⸻
Icebreaker Question
What is something in your life right now that feels the heaviest or most stressful?
Opening Scripture
Isaiah 53:5 NKJV
“But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.”
1 Corinthians 11:27–29 NKJV
“Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.”
⸻
Welcome and Introduction
Communion is more than a religious tradition. It is a sacred time when believers remember the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, examine their hearts, and recognize their connection to the Body of Christ.
The bread reminds us of the body of Jesus that was wounded and broken for us. The cup reminds us of His blood that was poured out for the forgiveness of our sins.
As we gather around the table, we remember that Jesus not only reconciled us to God, but He also brought us together as one spiritual family.
⸻
Part One: Remember His Sacrifice
Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. The punishment necessary for us to experience peace with God was placed upon Him.
Jesus willingly carried our sin, shame, guilt, pain, and punishment upon the cross. Communion calls us to slow down and remember the great price that was paid for our salvation.
Table Discussion
1. What stands out to you most in Isaiah 53:5?
2. What does it mean that Jesus was wounded for our transgressions?
3. How does the sacrifice of Jesus bring us peace with God?
4. Why is it important that we regularly remember what Jesus accomplished on the cross?
5. How should Christ’s sacrifice influence the way we live each day?
Key Truth
We do not receive forgiveness, healing, peace, or salvation because we have earned them. We receive them because Jesus willingly suffered in our place.
⸻
Part Two: Examine Your Heart
Paul instructed believers to examine themselves before receiving communion. This does not mean that a person must be perfect before coming to the Lord’s Table. None of us could receive communion if perfection were required.
The warning concerns receiving communion in an unworthy manner—carelessly, disrespectfully, selfishly, or without recognizing the sacred meaning of the bread and the cup.
Self-examination gives the Holy Spirit an opportunity to reveal anything in our hearts that needs to be confessed, surrendered, or corrected.
Table Discussion
1. What do you think it means to receive communion in an unworthy manner?
2. What is the difference between feeling unworthy and participating in an unworthy manner?
3. Why is self-examination important before receiving communion?
4. Are there attitudes, habits, offenses, or sins that can interfere with our fellowship with God?
5. How should we respond when the Holy Spirit reveals something that needs to change?
Personal Reflection
Take a quiet moment and prayerfully ask:
* Is there any sin I need to confess?
* Is there anyone I need to forgive?
* Have I caused division or hurt within the Body of Christ?
* Am I holding bitterness, pride, resentment, or unforgiveness?
* Is there an area of my life that I need to surrender to Jesus?
Key Truth
Self-examination is not intended to drive us away from Jesus. It is an invitation to come to Him with honesty, repentance, humility, and faith.
⸻
Part Three: Discern the Lord’s Body
To discern the Lord’s body means that we recognize the sacred significance of Christ’s physical sacrifice. It also reminds us that believers are members of His spiritual Body.
Communion is both personal and communal. We remember what Jesus has done for each of us, but we also recognize that we belong to one another.
We cannot properly honor the Head of the Church while dishonoring members of His Body.
Supporting Scripture
1 Corinthians 12:27 NKJV
“Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.”
Table Discussion
1. What does it mean to be a member of the Body of Christ?
2. Why do you think Paul connected communion with relationships among believers?
3. How can division, prejudice, jealousy, gossip, or unforgiveness damage the Body of Christ?
4. What are some practical ways we can honor and care for other believers?
5. How does communion remind us that we are united through Jesus?
6. Is there someone within the Body of Christ with whom you need to pursue peace or reconciliation?
Key Truth
The same grace that reconciles us to God should also shape the way we treat one another.
⸻
Part Four: The Table of Unity
At the Lord’s Table, social status, background, age, ethnicity, position, and personal accomplishments do not determine anyone’s value.
We all come to the table through the same sacrifice, the same blood, and the same grace.
Communion reminds us that there is one Lord, one faith, one family, and one Body.
Table Discussion
1. What does the Lord’s Table teach us about common union?
2. What are some things that commonly create division within churches?
3. How can we protect the unity of the Spirit without ignoring truth or accountability?
4. What can our table group do to strengthen relationships within the church?
5. How can we become more intentional about including, encouraging, and caring for others?
⸻
Communion Meditation
As you hold the bread, remember:
His body was wounded for our transgressions.
He carried our sin and suffered in our place.
By His sacrifice, we have been brought near to God.
As you hold the cup, remember:
His blood was poured out for the forgiveness of sins.
Through His blood, we have a new covenant, a new identity, and a new family.
Before receiving communion, take time to examine your heart, release offenses, confess sin, and thank Jesus for His grace.
⸻
Group Commitment
As members of the Body of Christ, we commit ourselves to:
* Remember the sacrifice of Jesus.
* Walk in humility and repentance.
* Forgive as we have been forgiven.
* Protect the unity of the Church.
* Encourage and care for one another.
* Honor every member of the Body of Christ.
* Proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
⸻
Closing Discussion
1. What is one truth from today’s discussion that you want to remember?
2. Is there a relationship that God is calling you to strengthen or restore?
3. What practical step can you take this week to honor the Body of Christ?
4. How can this group pray for you?
⸻
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. Thank You that the punishment for our peace was placed upon Him.
As we receive communion, help us to remember His sacrifice with reverence and gratitude. Search our hearts and reveal anything that does not please You. Forgive us, cleanse us, and help us to forgive others.
Teach us to discern and honor the Body of Christ. Remove division, pride, bitterness, and selfishness from among us. Make us one in heart, purpose, and love.
May our lives proclaim the death, resurrection, and victory of Jesus until He comes again.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
