Knowing GOD Intimately

Knowing GOD Intimately
By Don Vess

Key Scripture:

“…but the people who know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits.”
— Daniel 11:32 (NKJV)

Devotional:

The prophet Daniel foresaw a time of great persecution under Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a ruthless ruler who sought to destroy the Jewish people. Though he invaded Jerusalem and defiled the temple, there were those who stood strong because they knew their God. Among them was Mattathias and his sons, who refused to compromise their faith, sparking the Maccabean Revolt. Though thousands perished, their unwavering commitment inspired others to resist godlessness and defend the name of the Lord.

Knowing About God vs. Knowing God Intimately

Many people know about God, but far fewer truly know Him.

James 2:19 (NLT): “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.”

It’s easy to mistake knowledge for intimacy—to assume that reading books, attending church, or listening to sermons means we have a deep relationship with God. But just as reading about someone does not mean we truly know them, knowing facts about God does not mean we have an intimate relationship with Him.

J.I. Packer: “A little knowledge OF God is worth more than a great deal of knowledge ABOUT Him.”

True knowledge of God transforms us. It deepens our faith, strengthens our resolve, and gives us boldness to stand firm in times of struggle.

A New Perspective

When we know God intimately, our priorities change.

Jeremiah 9:23-24 (NLT): “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches. But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord…”

The world values success, power, and wealth, but these things fade. Knowing God is the only thing that matters. He is our source of strength, wisdom, and purpose.

A New Boldness

Daniel 11:32 is not just a historical statement—it’s a promise for us today.

“The people that know their God shall be strong and do exploits.” — Daniel 11:32 (KJV)

As the world grows darker, we do not need to fear. When we are rooted in an intimate relationship with God, we will stand firm and flourish, no matter the circumstances.

A New Contentment

Even in suffering, those who know God intimately find peace.

Romans 8:35-39 (NLT): “Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? …No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.”

Life brings hardships, but knowing Christ personally allows us to experience His joy and strength through it all.

Reflection Questions:
•Do I know God intimately, or do I simply know about Him?
•How has my relationship with God changed the way I respond to challenges?
•What steps can I take today to deepen my knowledge of God and experience His presence in a more personal way?

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father, I don’t just want to know about You—I want to truly know You. Draw me closer so that I may stand strong in faith, walk in boldness, and find contentment in Your presence. Help me to seek You daily and to trust in Your unfailing love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Invitation:

Do you know Him? If you’ve only known about God, today is the perfect time to start a real, personal relationship with Him. Seek Him in prayer, in His Word, and in daily communion. He is waiting for you.
