God of the Breakthrough
by Don Vess
David became king of Judah when he was 30 years old and reigned from Hebron. When he was 37 years old, Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle by the Philistines and Israel sent for him to reign over them also. He became king over all of Israel, both the northern and southern kingdoms and united them into one kingdom. However, there was still territory to be taken and one city in particular was Jerusalem, which was being controlled by the Jebusites who were original inhabitants of the land that were supposed to have been eliminated by Israel. They taunted David because they lived in the fortress of Zion, and no one had yet been able to conquer them. They said to David, “You’ll never be able to get in here! Even the blind and lame could keep you out!” But David did attack them and defeat them. On the day of the attack, he said to his troops, “I hate those ‘lame’ and ‘blind’ Jebusites. Whoever attacks them should strike by going into the city through the water tunnel.” Which they did and defeated the Jebusites and David made the city his home and it renamed it Jerusalem or Zion, the City of David.
When David had been on the run from Saul, he had gone with his men and joined forces with the Philistines. But after Saul was killed and David was now king over all of Israel, the Philistines saw him as a threat and wanted to capture him so he couldn’t become more powerful than he already was.
2 Samuel 5:17-25 NLT- When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of Israel, they mobilized all their forces to capture him. But David was told they were coming, so he went into the stronghold. 18 The Philistines arrived and spread out across the valley of Raphaim. 19 So DAVID ASKED THE LORD, “SHOULD I GO TO FIGHT THE PHILISTINES? WILL YOU HAND THEM OVER TO ME?” The Lord replied to David, “Yes, go ahead. I will certainly hand them over to you.” 20 So David went Baal Perazim and defeated them there. “THE LORD DID IT!” David exclaimed. “HE BURST THROUGH MY ENEMIES LIKE A RAGING FLOOD!” So, he named that place BAAL-PERAZIM (which means, “THE LORD WHO BREAKS THROUGH.”
22 But after a while the Philistines returned and spread out across the valley of Rephaim. 23 David again David asked the Lord what to do. “Do not attack them straight on,” the Lord replied. “Instead, circle around behind and attack them near the poplar trees. 24 When you hear the sound like marching feet in the top of the poplar trees, be on the alert! That will signal that the Lord is moving ahead of you to strike down the Philistine army. 25 So David did as the Lord commanded, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon to Gezer.
Many of us are needing a breakthrough in some area of our lives. It may be a need for a Spiritual breakthrough, or a breakthrough in finances or a broken relationship. We may be looking for a breakthrough in the lives of one or more of our children or a close loved-one.
Your situation may look like the situation David faced when he was being taunted by the Jebusites. But David determined that he would defeat them and found a way to “break-through into the city by using the aqua-duct.
God will always make a way for us even when there seems to be no way. He will provide a means for us to defeat our enemies and depose them. 2 Cor. 10:3-6 NKJV For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…
From what we have learned from Scripture the last few weeks, where is the battle won and lost? That’s right, in the soul, or the MIND. We are not in a battle against flesh and blood, except maybe of our own flesh. We are in a battle against Eph 6:12 NLT- …we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, against evil spirits in the heavenly places. But the break-through happens when we have settled things with God in our own spirit.
When I was growing up there was a term that was often used, “Praying through.” I am a firm believer in that concept. Many battles are lost because we don’t press in until we sense a “Break-through” in our spirit. It’s not that God requires us to spend a certain amount of time on our knees in order to secure the answer to prayer. But until we have settled the question in our spirit and have full assurance that we have received the answer that we need from God we haven’t experienced breakthrough. Luke 18:1 Amp Now Jesus was telling the disciples a parable to make the point that at all times they ought to pray and not give up and lose heart…
David sought the Lord until he received the answer he needed. He knew better than to go out to face such a formidable foe as the Philistine army of experienced, well-equipped soldiers who were bent on capturing him and stripping him of his power.
That is what the enemy wants to do to us! And we acquiesce when we are not living the way we should as a believer. John tells us in 1 John 3:2-10 NLT- Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but He has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He really is. 3 And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as He is pure. 4 For everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God. 5 And you know that Jess came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in Him. 6 Anyone who continues to live in Him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know Him or understand who He is. 7 Dear children, don’t let anyone deceive you about this; when people keep on sinning it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of came to destroy the works of the devil. 9 Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning because God’s life is in them. So, they CAN’T keep on sinning because they are children of God. 10 So we now can tell who are the children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers does not belong to God.
Then in verse 21 Dear friends, if we don’t feel guilty, we can come to God with bold confidence. 22 And we will receive from Him whatever we ask because we obey Him and do the things that please Him.
Sometimes our disobedience in a certain area of our lives will cause us to lose confidence in our own prayers because we feel guilty and “unworthy” to receive from the Father. The enemy will accuse us at every opportunity will do his dead-level best to keep us from praying with confidence that God will hear and answer our prayer.
On the contrary, God wants to bless us and desires that call upon Him so He can answer us. That is what faith is all about! Jesus Christ is our Baal-Perazim, the God of our break-through. 1 John 1:5-2:2 This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in Him at all. 6 So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. 7 But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, His Son cleanses us from all sin, 8 if we say we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth. 9 But if we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that His word has no place in our hearts. 2:1 My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate (lawyer, go-between) who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. 2 He Himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of the world.
Jesus is the One who broke-through the dividing wall in the temple that kept us out of the Holy Place and has made a way for us to come boldly into the very presence of God where we find mercy and grace to help us in our time of need. He is the one who broke through the stronghold of Satan and set a host of captives free as He descended into hell, and then He delivered gifts to the church, APOSTLES, PROPHETS, EVANGELISTS, PASTORS AND TEACHERS, to equip the saints to do the work of the ministry so the church can break through the darkness of this world and deliver the message of the gospel. that sets the captive free (Rom. 1:16 KJV For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation…
Heb 4:12-16 NLT- For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable. 14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, LET US HOLD FIRMLY TO WHAT WE BELIEVE. 15 This Hight Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for He faced all of the same testings we do, yet He did not sin. 16 Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
It is at the throne of Grace that we will find our Baal Perazim, the Lord of our breakthrough.
What is the greatest need of breakthrough in your life? How can you receive your breakthrough?
You may have already experienced some major breakthroughs in your own life. Yet, like David, there is still a “stronghold” such as Jebus or Jerusalem that needs to be conquered. There may be “Philistines” in your life that don’t want you to possess what you are destined for (David: King of all of Israel). We have to follow David’s example and inquire of the Lord and ask, believe Him for the victory. 1 John 5:1-4 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ (Jeshua Hamashiach-Jesus the Messiah) has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves His children, too. 2 We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey His commandments, and His commandments aren’t burdensome. 4 For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith.
He is our Baal Perazim, the Lord of our breakthrough. He wants you to experience your breakthrough. But you must BELIEVE! Your faith is the key! Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word (Rhema) of God. David sought the Lord until he received his Rhema, the revelation of God in his heart to act. Then he acted. The Lord revealed to him what to do the first time and then the second time He told him something different to do in order to experience his breakthrough. That is why it is important for us to wait upon the Lord to hear from Him (Ps. 46:10 Be still and know that I AM! GOD.)
Prayer: Father, I know that You are FOR me and who or what can ever be against me!
You did not spare Your own Son but gave Him up for me and because of that I have confidence that when I pray according to Your will as stated in Your word, that I will receive the petition I desire of You.
I realize that my warfare is not carnal, but is mighty through You and that you demolish every stronghold and bring every thought captive into obedience to Your word.
You are the God of my breakthrough! I boldly declare that You have already given me the victory through faith, as faith is the confidence that what I hope for will actually happen: it give me assurance about things that I cannot see.”
I am boldly declaring my breakthrough today. I declare that every bad habit, every weakness of the flesh, every destructive attitude, or any other stronghold in my life is BROKEN today! I come boldly before the throne of Your mercy, and I receive Your grace to help me in my time of need. Today is the day of my BREAKTHROUGH! Amen!
