DCC Devotionals: The 911 Christian
Theme: Living with Purpose and Power in Christ
by Jamie Kayali
Scripture Focus
•“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.” — John 17:20-21
•“But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’” — Matthew 14:30-31
Devotional Thought
Are we, as the body of Christ, in a spiritual coma? The brain is working—we know the Word, we hear the messages, we understand the commands—but are we taking action? Jesus’ prayer in John 17 shows us God’s desire: that we, as believers, would be united with Him and each other, walking in faith, authority, and purpose.
Too often, we find ourselves paralyzed by doubt, fear, or complacency. Like Peter stepping out of the boat, we start strong, but the moment we see the winds of life—financial struggles, health issues, or loss—we falter. Jesus gently reminds us, “Why did you doubt?” Faith is not just believing but acting on that belief, trusting that God will meet us when we step out.
This week, ask yourself:
•Are you fishing (doing what God has called you to do)?
•Are you cutting bait (serving in the small ways God is asking, such as helping, teaching, or encouraging)?
•Or are you standing in the way of what God wants to do in and through you?
Anxiety, fear, and distractions from the world can make us feel powerless. Yet, as Christians, we are far from powerless! We are partners with an all-powerful God who equips us to face any challenge. When we surrender to His authority and serve Him with obedience, we unlock His strength in our lives.
Reflection Questions
1.What is God asking you to do right now? Are you stepping out in faith, or are you holding back?
2.How can you “cut bait” this week by serving in small but meaningful ways?
3.Are you relying on the things of this world for security, or is your faith rooted in God’s promises?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for calling me to be part of Your body. Forgive me for the times I have doubted or hesitated to act. Help me to walk in faith, trusting that You will guide and sustain me. Show me how I can serve You today, whether in big steps or small acts of obedience. Let my life reflect Your power and glory to a world in need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Challenge for the Week
Step out in faith this week. Whether it’s volunteering, encouraging someone, or simply spending more time in the Word, take action. Don’t let fear or doubt stop you from experiencing the power of God in your life.
Key Scriptures for Study:
•Matthew 6:24-34 (The cure for anxiety)
•Romans 6 (Dead to sin, alive in God)
•2 Corinthians 6:1-10 (Living without offense)
God has equipped you for a life of victory—now go live it!
