One Body. One Table. One Lord.

DCC Devotionals: One Body. One Table. One Lord
By Don Vess

Scripture Focus:
Philippians 2:1–2 (NKJV)
“Therefore, if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship (koinonia) of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.”

Devotional Thought

At Christmas, we celebrate the miracle of Christ’s birth—God stepping into our world, taking on flesh, and dwelling among us. But Christmas also draws our hearts toward the cross. The manger points us to the table, and the table points us to the sacrifice.

Communion is more than a sacred ritual we observe—it is a living reminder of our shared life in Christ. Scripture calls this koinonia: fellowship, sharing, and partnership. Through Christ, we are brought into communion with God Himself—and with one another.

Jesus prayed that we would be one, just as He is one with the Father. That unity is not built on preference, personality, or tradition, but on His body broken and His blood poured out for us. Every time we receive communion, we proclaim not only His death, but His ongoing work of making us one body.

Like the disciples in Luke 5, we are reminded that the work of God was never meant to be done alone. When their nets were filled beyond capacity, they called for their partners. This is the picture of communion—shared obedience, shared blessing, shared life.

At the Lord’s Table, we are invited to pause, reflect, and remember. We examine our hearts, realign our spirits, and renew our commitment to live in unity and love. Communion calls us to lay down division, extend grace, and recognize Christ in one another.

This Christmas, as we remember His birth and His sacrifice, may we approach the table with gratitude, humility, and reverence—celebrating the miracle of Emmanuel, God with us.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,
Thank You for Your body broken for us and Your blood poured out on our behalf. As we remember You today, search our hearts and draw us into deeper unity with You and with one another. Teach us to walk in love, humility, and partnership through Your Spirit. May our lives proclaim Your death and resurrection until You return.
Amen.

Reflection Questions
1.What does koinonia—true fellowship and partnership—mean in my daily walk with Christ?
2.Is there anything the Lord is asking me to examine or realign before coming to His table?
3.How can I live out unity and love within the body of Christ this season?

“Do this in remembrance of Me.”
