DEVOTIONAL

You Cannot Earn What Jesus Already Paid For

One of the easiest traps for believers to fall into is trying to prove ourselves to God.

We may not bring burnt offerings or thousands of rams like the people described in Micah 6, but we can still fall into the same mindset:

“If I pray enough…”

“If I serve enough…”

“If I give enough…”

“If I am good enough…”

“Then maybe God will accept me.”

But that is not the Gospel.

God does call us to obedience. He does call us to live holy lives, serve others, give generously, repent of sin, and walk humbly with Him. But none of those things purchase our salvation.

Jesus already paid the price.

In Micah 6, God reminds Israel of everything He had already done for them. He delivered them, protected them, redeemed them, and remained faithful to them.

Then He tells them what He desires:

Do what is right. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your God.

God was after their hearts, not merely their religious activity.

The Danger of Self-Righteousness

Jesus illustrates this beautifully in Luke 18:9–14.

Two men went to pray.

One was a Pharisee who was confident in his own righteousness. His prayer was essentially a list of everything he thought made him better than everyone else.

The other man, a tax collector, simply cried out:

“God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”

Jesus said it was the second man who went home justified.

Why?

Because justification does not come through self-confidence.

It comes through humble dependence upon God’s mercy.

Martin Luther famously illustrated justification with the phrase:

“JUST-IF-I’D NEVER SINNED.”

That does not mean we have never sinned.

It means that through Christ, we can stand before God forgiven and declared righteous—not because of what we have done, but because of what Jesus has done.

Saved Because of Mercy

Titus 3:4–8 reminds us that God did not save us because of righteous things we had done.

He saved us because of His mercy.

That changes everything.

We do not have to live our lives trying to convince God to love us.

He already loves us.

We do not have to earn His grace.

Grace is a gift.

We do not have to prove that we deserve salvation.

None of us deserve it.

Our confidence rests completely in Jesus Christ.

Jesus Did Enough

The foundation of our justification is simple:

Jesus died for our sins.

1 Peter 2:24 teaches that Jesus bore our sins on the cross.

2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us that Christ, who knew no sin, became sin for us so that we could become the righteousness of God in Him.

We are not justified because we became good enough.

We are justified because Jesus was enough.

That means our salvation rests on His finished work, not our unfinished performance.

Grace Leads to Repentance

Grace does not mean sin no longer matters.

The same grace that forgives us also transforms us.

Hebrews 10:26 warns against deliberately continuing in sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth.

The proper response to grace is:

REPENTANCE.

Repentance means turning away from sin and turning toward God.

We are not trying to become holy so God will save us.

Because He has saved us, we now desire to live holy lives.

But God

Ephesians 2 gives one of the greatest descriptions of salvation in Scripture.

We were dead in sin.

BUT GOD…

God loved us.

God showed us mercy.

God made us alive with Christ.

God raised us up.

God saved us by grace.

Ephesians 2:8–9 makes it clear that salvation is by grace through faith and cannot be earned by human effort.

Then verse 10 reminds us that grace does not leave us without purpose.

We are God’s workmanship.

He has prepared good works for us to do.

So there is an important distinction:

We are not saved BY good works.

We are saved FOR good works.

Laboring From Gratitude

Especially on Labor Day weekend, it is worth remembering that there is no amount of spiritual labor that could ever repay God for what He has done.

And we do not need to repay Him.

Instead, our service becomes an expression of gratitude.

We pray because we love Him.

We worship because we love Him.

We give because we love Him.

We serve because we love Him.

We help others because we love Him.

We labor for His Kingdom—not to earn His favor, but because His grace has already changed our lives.

Jesus did enough.

And because He did, we can spend our lives joyfully saying:

“Lord, what can I do for You?”

We are not justified because we finally became good enough.

We are justified because Jesus Christ was good enough on our behalf.

We do not serve so that God will love us.

We serve because He already does.

We do not labor to earn His favor.

We labor because we are grateful for His grace.

Saved by grace.
Justified by faith.
Created for purpose.

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, thank You for Your mercy and grace. Thank You that our salvation does not depend upon our ability to earn Your favor, but upon the finished work of Jesus Christ. Forgive us for the times we have trusted in our own righteousness or compared ourselves to others.

Teach us to do what is right, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. Give us hearts that quickly repent when we sin and lives that reflect the grace we have received.

Thank You that we are Your workmanship and that You have created us for a purpose. Help us to serve You, Your Kingdom, and the people around us—not out of fear or obligation, but out of gratitude and love for everything You have done.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
