A Gift Fit for a King

“A Gift Fit for a King”
By Don Vess

Scripture Reading:
“Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.’”
– Matthew 2:1-2 (NLT)

Reflection

The story of the wise men, or Magi, offers us a powerful lesson in devotion and worship. These men traveled from afar, guided by prophecy and the light of a star, to bring gifts to the newborn King. Their journey reminds us that seeking Jesus often requires commitment, sacrifice, and faith.

While tradition often portrays the Magi as three kings, the reality was likely much grander. A caravan of over a hundred spiritual advisors or astrologers, possibly descendants of those taught by Daniel in Babylon, made their way to Jerusalem. They had studied the ancient prophecies and discerned the time and significance of His star rising in the east.

Upon reaching their destination, they presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, each symbolizing an essential aspect of His identity and mission:
•Gold represents His kingship and deity.
•Frankincense signifies His perfect life of holiness and devotion.
•Myrrh foreshadows His suffering and sacrificial death.

These treasures also provided for Joseph, Mary, and Jesus during their flight to Egypt and their return, showing that God’s provision is always timely and abundant.

Application

The gifts of the Magi challenge us to consider what we offer the King of Kings. While material gifts may honor Him, what He truly desires is our hearts, our worship, and our devotion.

Jesus taught, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:33 NLT). When we surrender all we are and hope to be, we find that His grace is more than sufficient for our needs.

This Christmas, reflect on what you can give to Jesus. Unlike the wise men, our gifts aren’t loaded onto camels, but they emanate from our hearts. Hebrews 13:15-16 reminds us, “Through Him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

Prayer

Lord, thank You for sending Jesus, the greatest gift of all. Help me to offer You the only gift worthy of a King—my heart, my worship, and my life. May my actions and words reflect Your love and bring glory to Your name. Amen.

Challenge

As you celebrate Christmas, take time to consider what you are offering to Jesus. Commit to giving Him your whole heart, and let your life be a reflection of His love and grace.
