I’m Free, Now What?

I’m Free, Now What?
By Don Vess

After the Civil War ended and President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring freedom for enslaved people, some slave owners withheld this truth from the enslaved. Many, unable to read or access the news, remained in bondage despite their legal freedom. Some, even after learning they were free, chose to remain with their masters, unsure of how to live a life outside of slavery.

This historical truth mirrors the spiritual reality many Christians face today. Although Jesus has set us free from the power of sin, many continue living as though they are still in bondage, either unaware of their freedom or choosing the familiar chains of their old life.

The apostle Paul reminds us in **Romans 6:12-23 (NLT)** that we should not let sin control us. Once we were slaves to sin, but now we have been set free to live for God. "Sin is no longer your master... instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace" (Romans 6:14). This freedom is not a license to sin but an invitation to live a life that honors God.

Just as former slaves had the choice to leave their old life behind or continue serving their masters, we too have a choice. Will we live in the freedom Jesus offers, or will we return to the familiar chains of sin?

Paul's words in **Galatians 5:13-14** emphasize that our freedom is meant for service. “You have been called to live in freedom... But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” True freedom comes when we break away from our sinful nature and walk by the Spirit, living the life God intended for us.

The challenge is clear: you are free, but how will you live? **1 John 1:5-7** warns that if we claim to walk with God but continue in sin, we deceive ourselves. Walking in the light means living in the truth of God's Word, not just claiming it.

Freedom from sin is not simply a status we attain; it’s a life we choose to live. The pull of sin can be strong, but as **James 1:12-15** reminds us, temptation comes from our own desires, and sin leads to death. The enemy, like Pharaoh chasing after the Israelites, may try to lure us back into bondage, but the power of God gives us the strength to stand firm in our freedom.

We are equipped for this battle. **Ephesians 6:10-18** outlines the armor of God that protects us from spiritual warfare. We are not powerless; by God's grace, we have been given "everything we need for living a godly life" (**2 Peter 1:3-4**).

The question remains: you are free, now what? What will you do with your freedom? Will you live in the light of God's truth and walk in His ways, or will you allow sin to drag you back into darkness? God has begun a good work in you, and He will continue to work until it is completed (**Philippians 1:6**).

Freedom is not just about release from bondage—it’s about stepping into the life God has prepared for you. Choose life. Choose freedom. Choose to live for Christ.
